Smarty Pants 3 - thinking fast, speaking slow

What does the phrase,

Think fast, speak slow’ mean to you?

For me, I see it as, not a confinement of your personality,
but as a way to come across as smart and thoughtful.

There’s been a lot of ‘put foot directly in mouth’ moments in my life.

My energy levels determine the quality of my talking ability. If I feel tired I’ll either go into flubber-mode, where I’ll proceed to lose all ability to speak, or I’ll go into quiet-mode (which is better than flubber-mode, but can come across as shyness)

It’s like that Mark Twain phrase, 'I’d rather be silent and look like a fool, than open my mouth and remove all doubt.'

These traits of mine aren't fixed.

Instead, I see them as obstacles or blank spots in my know-how I need to practice and improve.

We can learn to think fast, and speak slow.

We aren't born with knowing how to think and speak well, these are learned.

The first step to thinking fast, and speaking slow is being aware of who you are during certain situations. Knowing what kind of state you're in, will help us determine how we should engage and what to avoid.

The second step is knowing that the brain is one of our most valuable resource we have, therefore we need to cultivate and optimize it.

The ability to think fast is learned skill, through training and practice.

If you’re bad at talking, then practice doing it. If you talk 90 miles a minute, then practice talking less and being more deliberate.

And the last step is being thoughtful about what you’re going to say next. Pause for a moment before answering questions.
Don’t think of what to say when someone is talking to you, engage in what they are saying, then form responses around that.
